Original Tudor building

Mock Tudor Cladding.

Between the late 1400’s and mid 1600’s oak framing was a staple in the construction of houses and buildings. All oak frames were pegged and designed with strength in mind, but designs were starting to become lavish and pleasant on the eye.

The design of Tudor Buildings is still in fashion throughout the UK, however the way they are constructed has moved on. Now we can make a modern structure look like a Tudor design with “Mock Tudor Cladding”.

We saw air dried oak beams to various widths, and thick enough that the oak is stable on installation. We us air dried oak so that it has done the majority of its movement already. I think you’ll agree that the finish is quite lovely.

Its not just Tudor cladding that can be achieved. Oak can be used to clad anything from the front of a building, internal walls, or even boxes and vanity units.

Below you will see the oak cladding before it is installed. These sections sawn from oak beams retain the lovely character of oak and whether we sand it, brush, or just leave it to weather naturally it really does look great.

We were approached by a developer asking if we would be able to help with a project they were doing in surrey. The project was this gorgeous listed property, and the oak components had to be of an age and style to be in keeping with the building.

We of course were delighted to be involved with such a project!

Beginning of the frame design process

Porch

The first part of the project was to create an oak porch to give a huge impact on the front of the building. We set to design a raised collar front truss on the porch, and fabricated from older dried, character oak beams. The air dried oak beams were treated, sanded and brushed to bring out the grain pattern.

We sent the oak frame in a kit form which was installed on site. As you can see the finished article not only looks fantastic, but is a beautiful addition to the front of the property.

Internally the effect was to be the same. Old oak beams to match in with the rest of the aged beams in the property itself.

Internally we were asked to supply oak framed trusses for the bedroom, oak beams and rafters for some of the rooms, oak door linings and cladding to keep the design throughout.

You can see here from the oak truss, to the oak door linings that the use of older air dried oak was the exact finish required. All lovingly installed by the builders.
